News from the Front: Easy Company

F12 Brecourt Manoror those Band of Brother fans of Lt. Richard Winters you could easily find yourself facing a similar situation. Brecourt Manor, Axis Artillery, and some Axis infantry cards set the scene of his famous action. Destruction of those Artillery would gain you victory points, but they are well dug in. Can you make use of sound tactics and the small patrol you have to take out the guns? If you can Colonel Sink needs you at Holdy Manor. On the plus side the Colonel had a jeep card. Next expansion pack, Medal of Honor winners at D-Day? Ok, technically Winters did not receive the Medal of Honor, but the Distinguished Service Cross for that action. Damn quota system. So if you only get the Distinguished Service Cross for your game, don’t feel too bad. You are in good company.

News from the Front: Lt. Colonel Robert Cole

Static Defenses, Love them or hate them, we got to tour a number of bunkers and emplacements while in Normandy. These things certainly stopped an advance be it over a causeway, at a bridge or elsewhere. We really thought a lot about how to address these. There was a lot of after action reports about hitting these and avoiding them initially and then having to take them in the end. Probably the most famous being the bayonet charge led Lt. Colonel Robert Cole for which he received the Medal of Honor. While it was a couple days after D-Day on June 10 you could imagine a similar scenario in the game. A Large Farmhouse had been turned into the equivalent of a blockhouse. A Roadblock and Causeway cards are turned up along with an Axis mortar or 88. Taking out that roadblock was going to take sacrifice. Along Purple Heart Lane, that is what Cole had to do to reach Carentan.

So far the Pathfinder is winning by almost a 2:1 ratio. We will take votes to the end and I will count those votes from people who have commented or messaged me that they do not have Facebook.

Unit Type: The difference between paratrooper and glider

Some folks have noted that the unit type does not directly correspond to if a unit was dropped by parachute or deployed by glider and they are absolutely correct. Yes some howitzers were dropped by parachute. The real reason for the designation Howitzer Duffieldhas to do with the Flooded Fields terrain card. Certain units and equipment was not recoverable if it was dropped in the flooded fields. I have designated those cards to be glider cards, since the gliders could also not land in the flooded fields. But yes, it was possible to drop a pack howitzer, although the 377th was only able to recover 1 of 12 dropped howitzers. Maybe you will be more successful with your drop!
